2021 NHDKy State Contest

To best protect our judges, teachers, and students, NHDKy has opted into an all virtual 2021 contest season. Students who have advanced to the Kentucky State Contest will participate in live interviews with judges via zoom between April 22 and April 24, 2021. Schedules and zoom invitations will be sent closer to the contest dates.

We understand access to technology, reliable wifi, and/or a quiet space to participate in interviews may be a barrier preventing some of our students from participating in the interview process. Therefore, interviews will be an optional part of NHDKy participation for the 2021 contest season, and a student or group's eligibility to advance will not be impacted by their ability to participate in the interview process.

Prior to registration, please familiarize yourself with the new rulebook as well as our virtual project submission guidelines:

NHDKy State Contest

April 22-April 24, 2021

VIRTUAL

Thank you for volunteering to judge! Your help is greatly appreciated by NHDKy teachers, students, and guardians. Please notify our office at least one week in advance of your contest if you have to cancel, excepting emergencies the day of. Always feel free to contact us if you have any questions or concerns.

Orientation

Whether this is your first NHDKy experience or you're a seasoned pro, our team is dedicated to preparing all of our judges for a positive NHD experience. All of our State Contest judges will be invited to a zoom judges orientation in mid-April. This orientation will be recorded and distributed for later viewing. All of our judges will also receive a google folder filled with category-specific step-by-step guides on online judging, and information on how to give helpful feedback to our students. As always, our State Coordinator will be available to answer more specific questions and clarify any points of confusion.

Judging Process and Responsibilities

As judges, you will be working in teams of two or three to evaluate student projects in one of the five project categories (papers, websites, exhibits, documentaries, and performances). You will be asked to evaluate no more than 10 projects and will be responsible for working as a team to determine which projects will advance to the National Contest(no pressure). Judges can expect to have a week to judge and rank student projects.

Although the contest will not be in-person this year, judges are expected to be present for virtual student interviews.

Category Requests

We will do our best to assign you to the category and division you requested, but please be aware that participation numbers sometimes dictate otherwise.

Unsure of what category may be best for you? Project examples can be found at https://history.ky.gov/for-educators/national-history-day/nhd-for-judges-and-supporters/.
